Wycliffe Bible Translators

God’s Word is now available to some 900 Naskapi speakers living in an isolated area of northern Quebec. In a public ceremony held September 16, 2007, New Testaments were presented to every family group in the Naskapi Nation.

The Naskapi was one of 17 New Testaments and Bibles dedicated this past year with significant Wycliffe involvement, for language groups representing 7.16 million speakers.

A decade ago, translation was progressing at a pace which would have taken another 150 years for Bible translation to start in every language needing it. In 1999, Wycliffe adopted a vision statement called Vision 2025: By 2025, together with partners worldwide, we envision Bible translation in progress for every language which needs it.

Under God’s guidance, it has been a matter of working smarter, rather than harder: using the latest technology, working with cluster groups of related languages and partnering with other organizations.

God has blessed this endeavour. Since 1999, the number of languages needing Bible translation to begin has dropped by more than 700, from approximately 3,000 languages to 2,251 languages. This represents the greatest acceleration in Bible translation the world has ever seen!

Translation is in progress in 1,953 languages. Wycliffe personnel are working in 1,415 languages, in 93 countries. In 1999, 470 Bibles and New Testaments had been completed with Wycliffe involvement. The number is now more than 721, with new ones being added monthly.
