Anglican Primate writes a letter

Archbishop Fred Hiltz, Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, sent a letter to all Primates of the Anglican Communion dated January 9, in which he described in detail the state of the conversation on same-sex blessings in the Canadian church. "I hope to dispel rumour or misunderstanding by sharing with you what is actually happening," he wrote, stressing that the Canadian church continues to "rejoice in the fellowship we share throughout the Communion."

Samaritan's Purse seeks volunteers for relief teams to Mexico

Samaritan's Purse Canada is looking for volunteers to join disaster relief teams to assist people who were affected by severe flooding in southern Mexico last October. The teams will travel to Mexico to work with local churches and communities to repair damaged homes and assist the local families. Each team will serve for two weeks between January 19 and May 24.

Catholic magazine contests complaint

Father Alphonse de Valk, editor of Catholic Insight, says his magazine will vigorously contest a complaint filed against it with the Canadian Human Rights Commission. Edmonton resident Rob Wells filed a nine-point complaint against the magazine for allegedly offending homosexuals. Catholic Insight recently dealt with an unsuccessful attempt by a Toronto resident to strip it of its funding under Heritage Canada's Publications Assistance Program, also over alleged offense to homosexuals. Father de Valk says the magazine considers these actions against it to be trumped up and made with the intent to harass.

Debating God's existence at university

An academic debate on the topic 'Does God Exist?' will occur in the largest available lecture hall at the University of British Columbia January 29. William Lane Craig, professor of philosophy at Talbot School of Theology and author of over 30 books, will debate John Shook, an atheist and professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo. The debate is the finale in a series of UBC lectures by Craig. The Association of Christian Clubs (including Campus for Christ, Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, Navigators, University Christian Ministry, Baptist Student Ministries and Ambassadors for Jesus) is hosting this event.

ProWomanProLife.org has launched a new national web-based resource "by women, for women". With an active blog, YouTube videos, articles and more it aims to encourage women to be involved in pro-life issues.

Canadians help launch new Nicaraguan church

With help from Canada, worldwide Lutheranism added a new church body January 11. In Chinandega, Nicaragua, a city northwest of Managua, representatives of 23 Lutheran congregations voted to form Iglesia Luterana Sinodo de Nicaragua. The congregations in the area are the result of Winnipeg-based Lutheran Churches supporting the community's spiritual and physical needs for more than ten years. With teachers from Canada, the Nicaraguan church has trained 16 pastors and 30 deaconesses who serve the communities where the churches are located.

Concordia's new president

The Lutheran Church of Canada's Concordia University College in Alberta has appointed Gerald Crispin to be its the seventh president. Crispin, a professor of religious studies, succeeds Richard Kraemer.

Calvin Worship Symposium 2008 is on track

More than 100 Christian Reformed pastors, worship leaders, musicians, authors and liturgical specialists from across the United States and Canada will be speaking or participating in the 2008 Calvin Symposium on Worship at Calvin College in Grand Rapids January 24 - 26. "The symposium draws participants from more than 30 denominations around the world. At the same time, it has become a major event in the life of the Christian Reformed Church in North America," says Nathan Bierma, communications and research coordinator for the institute.

Author of Amish Grace visits Canada
