EFC raises concerns about Orissa
Jocelyn Durston, international policy analyst for the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada (EFC), has written an editorial asking: "Will this year's national elections bring relief to India's Christians?" EFC's Religious Liberty Commission also wrote a letter of thanks to MP Paul Szabo last week for presenting two petitions in the House of Commons regarding persecution of Christians. One petition addresses the plight of Christians around the world, the other highlights the situation facing Christians in the Kandhamal district in the Indian state of Orissa, a concern that the EFC commission raised in a recent report.
Toronto students support school in northern Ontario
Catholic students in Toronto have gathered 2,300 letters in support of an effort by a Catholic NDP MP to get a new school built on an isolated Indian reserve in northern Ontario. Charlie Angus, who represents Timmins James Bay, has been fighting for a new school in Attawapiskat since 2000, when contamination from leaking oil pipes shut the existing school down. Since then, the Department of Indian Affairs has spent over $5 million for expansion of the school and temporary classrooms. However, Angus argues the portables are overcrowded and are developing mould problems and young children and children in wheelchairs have to travel outside in the winter between classrooms. -- Canadian Catholic News

Better communications needed
Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Father Thomas Rosica to a five-year term as Consultor to the Pontifical Council for Social Communications. Rosica is CEO of the Salt and Light Media Foundation and Television Network (Canada's first national Catholic TV network). The Council is an advisory body. Roscia said the importance of good communications was illustrated by the recent firestorm of criticism over the lifting of the excommunication of four Society of St. Pius X bishops, one of whom is a Holocaust-denier. -- Canadian Catholic News
