Online learning is becoming a significant trend in
modern education, because of its convenience and flexibility – and
TWU continues to grow its FOCUS program for motivated students.
FOCUS, which stands for Freshman Online Certificate
University Studies, currently enrolls a variety of students who like the
ease of online learning and the Christian worldview which is at the heart
of TWU’s ethos.
“Our students have been young and middle-aged,
male and female, and from many parts of Canada,” says Simon Gibson,
program advisor. “Students have consistently told us how much
they like the curriculum and their professors,” he adds. “We
recommend allocating about 30 hours a week; so those who don’t have
that time available may experience a little stress.”
FOCUS is cohort-based – which means all
students learn and study together in a nurturing online community.
A learning coach (unique to FOCUS) is popular with
students – and permits a high level of contact and assistance, on
assignments and study techniques.
Courses offered are typical of those selected by many
first year students: communications, psychology, fine arts, anthropology,
business and others.
“One of the benefits of FOCUS is that it offers
the advantage of a year of study at Trinity Western University, whatever
the circumstances,” Gibson says.
“Homeschooling families, in particular, will
appreciate the flexibility; students graduating from high school can make
the smooth transition to university, and still remain at home for at least
one more year.”
Gibson says FOCUS has also been attractive to working
adults who want to begin work on their degree, but would rather not travel
to the campus.
“We’ve been pretty pleased with the
response to FOCUS, but I know we have the capacity to add more students for
either the spring or fall semesters.”
