Smile for the camera
Over 20 photographers will be at Union Gospel Mission in Vancouver on December 4 to take photos of individuals and families who could not otherwise afford a Christmas portrait. Help Portrait is a cooperative effort of a number of non-profit organizations. The day includes complimentary hair and makeup services and free postage to mail the finished portraits to loved ones. A local church, Artisan Church will provide live music throughout the day. Local artists and street performers have also been invited to show or sell their art, read their poetry, sing or dance.
People who live in glass towers
The Crystal Cathedral in Orange County, California, filed for bankruptcy protection October 18, in order to deal with debts of more than $43 million. The church, founded in the 1950s by Robert H. Schuller, is known for its 2800-seat soaring glass building and its ‘Hour of Power’ television broadcasts.
Rock the airwaves
Crossroads Television System is airing a broadcast of this summer’s Rock the River events on Saturday, October 30. The youth events, sponsored by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association featured performances by popular Christian bands and messages from Franklin Graham.
Thinking is in the cards
The Christian think tank Cardus has released the fall issue of its online journal ‘Cardus Policy in Public’. The issue has articles dealing with such intriguing topics as civil religion, thick society, prison reform, quantitative oppression, and the rights of religious communities.
The write stuff
The Word Guild is offering Write Toronto, a one-day writing conference Saturday, November 13 in conjunction with the TIM Centre at Tyndale University College and Seminary. Keynote speaker Mags Storey will talk about ‘Writing Courageously,’ touching on novel writing, journalism and publicity communications.
Sexy elections
Don Hutchinson, director of the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada’s Centre for Faith and Public Life, has written a blog comments called ‘Are Municipal Elections Sexy Enough to Get Your Attention? Ignoring them could be a critical mistake.’ He argues that it is important for Christians to get involved and vote in municipal elections because they are “the level of government that most impacts you, your children and your church on a daily basis.”
