“The Future We Want,” the concluding statement of the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, which will be signed by 52 heads of state on June 22, will not contain language about “population dynamics,” “reproductive rights” and “reproductive health services.” Groups such as the UN Population Fund and the International Planned Parenthood Federation had been pushing for the language in an effort to protect the environment by reducing human population. The language was opposed by organizations such as the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children and the Roman Catholic Church, by Russia and by the G77 (a group of developing nations).
