canadianchristianity.com email interview with Bruce Clemenger, president, The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada

What is the attitude of the larger Canadian society to Christianity? Is this changing? In what ways? What impact is secularism having? What is the character of Canadian society generally, how is it changing, and what impact is that having on the church?

We are living in a post-Christendom society which is secularized yet very religious and highly individualistic. While there is a cooperative, conciliatory and generous spirit that is manifest, and often commented upon by people from other countries, Canada is in transition.

In the aftermath of a period of rapid secularization, Canada is searching for a clearer sense of its identity amidst the diversity of culture, race, religion, lifestyle, social and political visions. Societal norms are being challenged and reevaluated, and what it means to be multicultural and religiously plural is being pressed in various forums.

In the midst of the transition, Christians are called to be faithful witnesses to the Gospel in word and deed. As we journey with our neighbours and fellow citizens, we seek to express compassion, grace and love, and to be champions of the norms and a vision of life that will bring blessing and peace.
